ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona baseball added a win and a loss to its record on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions split a doubleheader with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College at Juniata Civic Baseball Field.

Penn State Altoona (7-15, 4-6 AMCC) lost game one 12-8 before bouncing back to grab a 16-6 victory in game two.

In game one, the Lions allowed an early 7-0 lead to slip away, as D'Youville (3-13, 1-7 AMCC) outscored Penn State Altoona 12-1 in the final five innings.

Chase Clouser (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome) led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Peter Jacobs (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

George Stiuso (Milford, NJ/Gill St. Bernard's) started on the mound and took a no decision, going four innings and giving up five runs. Hunter Johnson (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) followed Stiuso in relief, and Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) tossed three innings while giving up four runs to take the loss.

Penn State Altoona appeared to be well on its way to a comfortable win in the opening game of the doubleheader, as the Lions got seven runs across in the bottom of the second inning. Chris Michaelis (Albany, NY/Albany) got the big inning started with an RBI single to center, and Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) scored on a throwing error during the next play to make it 2-0. Austin Anderson (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) followed with an RBI double to left, and Jacobs hit a three-run home run – his third homer of the season – to left field to give the Lions a 6-0 advantage. Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) drove in his team's seventh run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.

D'Youville came back with two runs in the top of the third inning on RBI base hits from Dylan Haak and Travis Macrides.

In the top of the fifth, the Spartans rallied for a six-run inning to grab the lead. Haak's RBI single to right and Macrides' two-run base hit to right-center made it a two-run game, and Patrick Mulligan's two RBI double to left tied the score. Braden Bova put D'Youville ahead 8-7 on Braden Bova's RBI single up the middle.

Penn State Altoona tied things up with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fifth, when Clouser hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center that made it 8-8.

But D'Youville used the long ball to regain the lead in the sixth, when Macrides' three-run homer to left put the visitors up 11-8. Haak's RBI double to center in the seventh inning gave the Spartans a 12-8 lead.

In game two, Penn State Altoona got persistent offense to prevent a collapse, as the Lions plated 16 runs on 19 hits.

Jim Shomberg (Lansdale, PA/Methacton) had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, a game-high six RBI, and three runs scored. Anderson was also productive, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Cumming finished 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored, while Aidan Plants (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Breon finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored, and Jacobs was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Stephen Schanne (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) went 2-for-2.

Aaron Sharp (Freeburg, PA/Midd-West) claimed his first win of the season on the rubber, giving the Lions seven innings of work while yielding five runs and striking out four. Aaron Smith (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) pitched two innings out of the bullpen, giving up one run while striking out five batters.

After D'Youville got a run in the top of the first inning on Macrides' RBI single to center, Penn State Altoona answered with four in the bottom half of the inning. Shomberg's RBI double to center tied the score before Cumming hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left that put the Lions ahead 4-1.

The Lions got four more across in the second to extend their lead to 8-1. Plants' RBI double down the left field line drove in the first run of the inning before Shomberg hit his team-leading fourth homer of the year, a three-run blast to center.

The Spartans made it 8-2 on Justin Brackna's solo home run to center in the top of the third, but Penn State Altoona scored four more runs in the bottom of the inning. After Plants' sac fly to center got one run in, Shomberg and Cumming added RBI singles. Jordan McCall (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) drew a bases loaded walk to score Cumming, giving Penn State Altoona a 12-2 advantage.

The Lions added two more runs to their total in the fourth. Anderson reached on an error and later came around to score on a wild pitch, and Shomberg's RBI single to right-center made it 14-2.

Macrides drove two runs in for D'Youville in the top of the fifth on his base hit up the middle, but Penn State Altoona got both of those runs back in their half of the inning. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) picked up an RBI when he reached on an error, allowing Breon to score. Andrew Culp's (Oxford, PA/Oxford) fielder's choice grounder drove in Carey later in the inning to make it 16-4.

D'Youville got a run in the seventh on Brackna's RBI double to right, and they added another run in the eighth on an RBI hit through the left side by Josh Hammer.

Schedule note: Tomorrow's scheduled doubleheader at non-conference opponent Penn College has been postponed due to the expectation of heavy rain. A potential makeup date for the games has not yet been determined. With the postponement, the Lions' next action is on Wednesday, April 18, when the team will travel to face non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College for a doubleheader in Latrobe.
