Frostburg Rallies Past Lions 7-5

ALTOONA, Pa. – Frostburg State University overcame a 5-2 deficit on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Penn State Altoona baseball team in a non-conference matchup at Juniata Civic Baseball Field.

The Lions (8-17) held a three-run lead through seven innings, but they were sunk by Frostburg's five-run eighth inning.

Jim Shomberg (Lansdale, PA/Methacton) had three of Penn State Altoona's six hits, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs batted in, and one run scored. Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Chase Clouser (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome) scored two runs for the Lions.

Jacob Plunket (Altoona, PA/Altoona) made a strong start on the mound for Penn State Altoona and took a no decision. In six innings of work, the right-hander allowed just two runs on eight hits and two walks. Sawyer Kline (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) pitched two innings in relief and yielded two earned runs, taking the loss for the Lions. Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Penn State Altoona got on the board first when Dylan Bates (Towanda, PA/Towanda) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 1-0. The Lions extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning on Shomberg's two-run double to left-center.

Frostburg (19-11) picked up a run in the third on Logan Corrigan's sacrifice fly, then the Bobcats cut Penn State Altoona's lead to 3-2 in the fourth on Mike Takovich's RBI single up the middle.

Shomberg's RBI double to center in the bottom half of the fourth gave Penn State Altoona a little breathing room. The Lions upped their lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning when Shomberg reached on a single through the right side, moved up to third on Cumming's double, and scored on an infield error.

But Frostburg put together a five-run top of the eighth inning to grab its first lead of the day. Jason Paredes' two-run double cut the Lions' lead to 5-4, and Takovich put the Bobcats ahead with a two RBI double down the right field line. Brock Antognoni's RBI single to shortstop made it 7-5.

Next, Penn State Altoona baseball hits the road tomorrow, Monday, April 23 for a doubleheader at non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
