Lions Split Monday Twinbill

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona baseball hosted its second doubleheader in as many days on Monday afternoon, taking on Pitt-Bradford for a pair of games at Stewart Athletic Field.

The Lions (2-4) pulled out a 2-1 walkoff victory in game one, but Pitt-Bradford (1-1) got the best of Penn State Altoona in game two, prevailing 16-10.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 2, Pitt-Bradford 1

Penn State Altoona snapped its three-game skid with a walkoff win in game one.

The Lions got a strong start on the mound from Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel), who pitched a complete game for his first collegiate win. In seven innings of work, the right-hander surrendered no earned runs while limiting Pitt-Bradford to just four hits and one walk. Glass also struck out four batters.

Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) had two of Penn State Altoona's eight hits in the game, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) delivered the walkoff hit for the Lions in the bottom of the seventh.

Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) and Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) each finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, with McClain representing the game-winning run. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen), Anthony Iannizzi (Leesburg, VA/Heritage), and Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) also had hits for the Lions, and Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) drove in a run.

Penn State Altoona got a run in the bottom of the first to stake out the early lead. Breon led off the frame with a walk, then moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches. With one out, Cumming got Breon home with a sacrifice fly to center.

Bradford tied things up in the top half of the third, using a two-out RBI single from Jake McNabb to knot the score 1-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, when Penn State Altoona finally broke through for the go-ahead run. With McClain at first base following a bunt single, Ennis' well-placed bouncer through the left side put runners at the corners with one out. After a pop out, Hillard's base hit to left-center scored McClain and sealed the one-run, walkoff victory for the Lions.

Game Two: Pitt-Bradford 16, Penn State Altoona 10

After a low-scoring pitchers' duel in game one, the second game of the doubleheader followed a much different script, as Penn State Altoona and Pitt-Bradford combined for 26 runs, 26 hits, and eight errors in the nightcap.

Cumming went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Carey hit 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Breon, Ennis, McClain, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) finished with one RBI apiece.

Hunter Johnson (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) got the start on the mound for Penn State Altoona, pitching two innings and taking the loss. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) followed Johnson with 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Bryson Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) took over the pitching duties for the next three innings and pitched effectively, giving up two hits, one walk, and no earned runs while striking out one batter. Austin Miller (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) added 2/3 inning out of the bullpen, surrendering no earned runs and recording one strikeout.

Pitt-Bradford scored a run in the top halves of the first and second innings to work its way out to a 2-0 lead. In the first, McNabb's RBI single through the left side plated the Panthers' first run, and in the second, Nick Stein's run-scoring groundout to second made it 2-0.

The Lions' bats awoke for a six-run frame in the bottom of the second. Carey's RBI single to center got things started, and Breon's run-scoring base hit to left tied the game. McClain's groundout plated Quinten Moslak (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), and an RBI single down the left field line from Ennis brought home Wildasin. Cumming followed with a two-run double to center, putting Penn State Altoona up 6-2.

But Pitt-Bradford responded with a big inning of its own in the third to reclaim the lead for good. Nico Hall's two-run double and Kevin Rehak's three-run double put the Panthers back on top, and run-scoring singles from Stein and McNabb extended the visitors' lead to 10-6.

Matt LaBadie led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to increase Pitt-Bradford's advantage to 11-6, and Samuel Dreistadt's RBI single and McNabb's RBI groundout made it 13-6.

Penn State Altoona got back to within striking distance in the bottom of the fourth. Richard's RBI single to right-center scored the Lions' seventh run of the game, and Carey followed with a fielder's choice grounder that allowed McClain to score. On that play, a Pitt-Bradford throwing error brought Hillard home from third base, and the Lions whittled their deficit to 13-9.

Penn State Altoona inched closer in the fifth, helped by back-to-back errors by the Panthers to start the inning. After a throwing error allowed McClain to reach safely and advance to second, a fielding error in the next at-bat brought him home, cutting Pitt-Bradford's lead to 13-10.

But Pitt-Bradford tacked three more runs on to its total in the top of the seventh to close out their win by a six-run margin. Hall's sac fly to right scored one run for the visitors, and LaBadie hit his second home run of the game – a two-run shot to right – to make it 16-10.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball officially starts its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with a doubleheader on the road at Alfred State College this Saturday, March 27. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
