Baseball Splits Pair at Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team hit the road for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lions faced off against non-conference opponent Penn College at Bowman Field.

Penn College (12-12) came out on top in game one, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to erase a deficit and win 8-6. Penn State Altoona (9-12) bounced back to win game two behind strong pitching, as the Lions triumphed 3-1.

Game One: Penn College 8, Penn State Altoona 6

The Lions dropped game one of the doubleheader, which proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Penn College built a 4-2 lead after two innings, but Penn State Altoona worked its way back and jumped ahead, 6-4, in the top of the sixth. However, the home team responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately win the game.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) and Harrison Knaupe (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) each drove in a pair of runs for the Lions, while Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each had one RBI apiece. Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) scored a pair of runs and stole two bases.

Brycen Flinton (Denver, PA/Cocalico) started at pitcher and went three innings, finishing with a no decision. Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) tossed three innings out of the bullpen and took the loss.

Penn State Altoona scored a run in the top of the first inning to nab the early lead. McClain led off with a single, swiped second base, and later scored on Hillard's sacrifice fly to center.

Penn College scored a run in the bottom of the first to tie the score, but the Lions went back in front in the top of the second. Ingold started the frame by drawing a walk, before a base hit to left by Fred Guarino IV (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) and a walk by Jimmy Mento (Corapeake, NC/Gates County) loaded the bases with no outs. One batter later, Knaupe sent a sac fly to right, scoring Ingold to put Penn State Altoona up by one, 2-1.

The Wildcats responded quickly again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run double from Jaydon Goebel and an RBI double from Jaiden Augustine to establish a 4-2 advantage.

Penn College's two-run lead held up until the top of the fifth, when Penn State Altoona was able to even the score. McClain started the inning with a walk, and Green followed with an infield single to put two runners on base. After a pitching change, Hillard's single to left scored McClain, and one batter later, Ingold's RBI base hit to left brought Green home and knotted the score at 4-4.

The Lions scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take their first lead since the first inning. Mento and Luke Angstadt (Lancaster, PA/Cocalico) both drew walks to start the inning, and Knaupe's RBI single to center put his team in front. Later, Green's sacrifice fly to right drove in Angstadt, and Penn State Altoona carried a 6-4 lead out of the inning.

But Penn College struck back with a four-run bottom half of the sixth, capped by a two-run homer from Griess that gave the Wildcats an 8-6 advantage. The Lions got the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Penn College was able to hang on to maintain its two-run cushion.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 3, Penn College 1

The Lions were led by solid pitching in the nightcap, as Penn State Altoona's staff limited Penn College to just one run on three hits and four walks across seven innings. The visitors scored two in the first and added one in the fourth, ultimately finishing with a two-run victory.

Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) got the nod at pitcher and threw four shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season. The left-hander allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out four batters along the way.

Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) pitched the fifth inning out of the bullpen and struck out two batters, and Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) tossed a scoreless sixth with one strikeout.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and struck out the side to notch a record-setting save for the Lions. Chamberlain's save, his sixth of the season, set a new Penn State Altoona single-season record for the most saves by a Lions player in a year.

At the plate, Ingold went 2-for-2 with two walks, Knaupe was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, and Chamberlain hit 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, and McClain was also 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Green and Guarino also had one hit apiece for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona put two runs on the board in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles to start the inning by McClain and Green put the Lions in business, and McClain scored on an error during the next at-bat for his team's first run. Chamberlain's RBI single to center plated Green, and the Lions secured a 2-0 lead.

The Lions tacked another run on to their total in the fourth. Hlivia led off with a walk, then advanced to second on Aidan Donovan's (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) sac bunt. Hlivia proceeded to steal third base, then came home on an outfield error to give Penn State Altoona a 3-0 advantage.

Penn College got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of Ethan Stahl's RBI single to left. But Penn State Altoona allowed no further damage, and the Lions ended their day with a 3-1 win.

Penn State Altoona baseball gets back to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play for its next games, as the Lions will return home to host league opponent Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader this Saturday, April 13. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
