Men’s Golf Places Fourth at Stevenson Invitational

UPPERCO, Md. – Penn State Altoona men's golf finished its 2017-18 schedule on Monday with a strong showing in the Stevenson University Spring Invitational at Piney Branch Golf Club, as the Lions placed fourth out of nine teams with a combined score of 322.

Host school Stevenson won the event by shooting 306. Lebanon Valley College was the runner-up with 316, and Rutgers University-Camden was third with 318.

Penn State Altoona's score of 322 represents a 20-stroke improvement from last Tuesday's performance in the Gettysburg College Invitational. The Lions' team of five on Monday was comprised of all freshmen, with Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) and Payton Guelich (Sandy Ridge, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) leading the way.

Gillespie had Penn State Altoona's low score on the day, as he fired a 78 on the par 71 course to tie for seventh place out of 47 individual golfers. Guelich shot 79 to tie for 10th place.

"I can't say enough about Jimmy Gillespie and his effort. He is a quiet leader and capped a great freshman campaign today," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "This freshman class has the opportunity to be special. They need to put work in this summer and improve on certain aspects of each of their respective games. I'm excited to welcome them back this fall, as well as our recruiting class."

Carter Fischer (Bellefonte, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) shot an 81 to tie for 13th place, Jacob Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) carded an 84 to tie for 27th, and Luke Hoffnagle (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) rounded out the team with an 85.

Today's event was Penn State Altoona golf's second and final date of its spring schedule, officially bringing the team's 2017-18 season to a close.
