MEADVILLE, Pa. – After the first day of the Guy and Jeanne Memorial Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club of Meadville, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in 11th place out of 14 teams.

The Lions shot 322 as a team, placing them ahead of Westminster College (323), Gannon University (324), and Thiel College (339). Mercyhurst University held down first place after day one, posting a team score of 300. The University of Rochester was in second with 301.

"We come to this event to measure ourselves against some of the best teams in our region, as well as some Division II teams," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "Once again, we weren't at our best, but we showed that we have potential if we are at our best."

Ethan Yohe (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) paced the Lions, carding a 76 to tie for 16th place out of 77 individual golfers. Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) shot a 77 to tie for 19th place.

"Ethan showed that he can be a key contributor on our team. He birdied three of the four par fives and took advantage of his length," said Koehle. "Jimmy is just so scrappy and continues to be dependable for us. It's a great comfort every time he's in the lineup."

Carter Fischer (Bellefonte, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) shot an 84, Luke Hoffnagle (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) finished with an 85, and Payton Guelich (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) rounded out the group with a 91.

Due to the expectation of heavy rain, tomorrow's second round of the invitational has been rescheduled to Monday, September 10 with a start time of 10:00 a.m.

"With the washout tomorrow, we can rest up and be ready to go on Monday," said Koehle. "The goal is to climb the standings, improve on today, and prepare for our home match next Saturday."
