Lions Golf Finishes Second in Lycoming Invitational

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf put together another strong performance on Monday, when it compiled a team score of 318 to come in second place in the Lycoming College Invitational at Williamsport Country Club.

The Lions' 318 represents the team's third-lowest score in a round this season, but they were edged by Penn College, who won the event with 316. Runner-up Penn State Altoona finished ahead of Susquehanna University (330), Keuka College (338), Penn College's 'B' team (339), and Wilson College (419).

"It was a great opportunity to play one of the state's greatest golf courses," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "Williamsport is a tournament-level course, and I was thrilled with our individual efforts today."

Penn State Altoona got impressive performances from the top of its lineup.

Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) shot a 75 on the par 71 course, tying his second-lowest score of the season. That propelled Gillespie into the top spot on the leaderboard, as he finished in first place individually out of 32 golfers. Meanwhile, Ethan Yohe (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) tied his season-low by shooting 76, finishing as the individual runner-up.

"Jimmy has worked hard and never gives up on a round," said Koehle. "He turned a slow start into a great round and an individual championship. He birdied four of his last nine holes to come back and win."

Jacob Mrvos (Pittsburgh, PA/Norwin) posted his lowest score of the season, finishing with an 82 to tie for 10th place individually. Payton Guelich (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) carded an 85 to tie for 14th place, and Frankie Guinan (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) shot 94 to come in 25th.

"Despite two bad holes, Jake turned in a solid effort to give the team a chance to win," Koehle said. "Jake is giving himself great opportunities to stay in the lineup."

Next, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team will travel to the Lawrence Park Golf Club in Erie, Pa. to play in the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Monday, October 1 at 12:00 p.m.
