Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at PA Classic

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team wrapped up its first event of the spring semester with a fourth-place finish, as the Lions settled into fourth out of 18 teams after the second and final round of the Pennsylvania Classic on Saturday.

Play on Saturday shifted to the Penn State Blue Course, where Penn State Altoona shot 291 as a team on the par 72 course. The Lions finished with a two-day total of 603, taking fourth place on the team leaderboard. Penn State Altoona's round of 291 represents the second-lowest team round in program history, and it tied for the lowest team score of the day.

Franklin & Marshall College won the Classic with a two-round score of 582. Allegheny College was second with 586, and Swarthmore College placed third with 588.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for the third-lowest score in a round in Penn State Altoona golf history, firing a 2-under par, 70, to place himself in a tie for seventh place out of 103 individuals with a two-day score of 146.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) tied for 12th place, shooting 74 in Saturday's round to finish with a combined score of 150. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) took 22nd place, totaling 153 across two rounds after his even-par score, 72, on Saturday.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) shot 75 in Saturday's round, finishing with 159 to tie for 34th place. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) tied for 40th place, carding 81 on Saturday and recording a two-round score of 160.

Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona's 'B' team finished in a tie for eighth place. The 'B' squad shot 318 on Saturday and totaled 640 across the two days.

Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) tied for 27th place, firing 78 on Saturday to total 157 in two rounds. Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) carded 79 in round two, tallying a combined score of 160 to tie for 40th place. Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) had a combined score of 162 to tie for 47th place, after shooting 84 on Saturday.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) shot 80 in Saturday's action, finishing with a two-day score of 164 to tie for 56th place. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) tied for 65th, carding 81 on Saturday and totaling 167 in two rounds.

Penn State Altoona's pair of individuals also wrapped up their participation in the Classic on Saturday. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) shot 80 on Saturday, totaling 158 in two rounds to tie for 29th place individually. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) scored an 85 in round two, tying for 60th place with a two-day score of 165.

Next up for the Penn State Altoona men's golf program, the Lions will send a junior-varsity squad to compete in the Grove City MBA Invitational on Thursday, April 4, at the Grove City Country Club. That event is scheduled to tee off at 1 p.m.

The team's next varsity event is Sunday, April 7 and Monday, April 8, when the Lions will compete in The Hershey Cup, hosted by the University of Rochester at Hershey Country Club's East Course. Sunday's round is slated to start at 8:45 a.m., with Monday's round beginning at 8:30 a.m.
