Men’s Golf Wins Home Spring Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Lions men's golf team hosted its final home event of the 2023-24 season on Friday, welcoming 12 other schools to compete in the Penn State Altoona Spring Invitational at Sinking Valley Country Club.

After battling through challenging weather conditions that consisted of rain, gusty winds, and chilly temperatures, the Lions finished the day by clinching their fourth tournament win of the season, ranking first out of 17 total squads. Penn State Altoona shot 295 as a team on the par 72 course, tying for the program's fourth-lowest score in a round.

Westminster College was the runner-up with 302 and Penn College was third with 303.

Penn State Altoona's 'A' team was led by Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy), who shot an even-par 72 to tie for the day's lowest score out of 90 individuals. Nusbaum was edged in a card-off with Juniata College's Harrison Levithan, who also shot 72, for the tournament's individual title.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) shot 1-over par, placing third individually with a 73. Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) and Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) were both 3-over, as each player carded a 75 to tie for eighth place. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) shot 5-over par, tying for 20th place with 77.

Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona's 'B' team shot 319 to come in eighth place out of 17 teams.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) had the best score for the Lions' 'B' squad, firing 5-over par to tie for 20th place on the player leaderboard with 77. Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) was 7-over, shooting 79 to tie for 27th place individually.

Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) scored an 81 to place 35th, Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) shot 82 to take 41st place, and Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) came in 61st place with 86 to round out Penn State Altoona's 'B' team.

The Lions also had two other golfers compete as individuals. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) finished the round 6-over par, firing 78 to tie for 23rd place. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) took 50th place with 84.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action on Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16, competing in the Win Palmer Cup. The two-day event is hosted by Wittenberg University and will be held at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley. Play is scheduled to start at 10:10 a.m. for the Lions in Monday's run, then will get underway at 9 a.m. for Tuesday's round.
