Lions Shut Out Shenandoah 2-0 for First Win

ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's soccer notched its first win of the 2017 season on Saturday afternoon, blanking non-conference opponent Shenandoah University 2-0 at Spring Run Stadium.

Seth Murrelle (Sayre, PA/Sayre) and Erikson Miguel (Luanda, Angola/Semente do Saber) scored goals for the Lions (1-3). Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made four stops in net to record his first collegiate shutout and post his first win at Penn State Altoona.

After a scoreless first half, Murrelle broke the tie early in the second period to give Penn State Altoona a 1-0 lead. Peyton Salonick (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) sent a ball from the right side of the box to the middle, and it found Murrelle, who beat the keeper for his team-leading third goal of the season.

The Lions came up with an insurance goal later in the period. A long ball deflected off of a pair of Shenandoah defenders and bounced right to Miguel, who dribbled in on goal. Maneuvering around the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation, Miguel sent a shot into the open net at 73:41 to pick up his first collegiate goal and give Penn State Altoona a 2-0 lead.

On the day, the Lions led 13-9 in total shots, including holding a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. Shenandoah (2-2) led 5-4 in corner kicks.

Murrelle finished with a team-high four total shots, including three on goal. Miguel had three total shots, with two of them coming on goal.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer returns to action on Wednesday, September 13 with another home game. The Lions will host non-conference opponent Frostburg State University at 6:00 p.m. that day.
