Bearcats Overcome Lions 3-1

LATROBE, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's soccer scored the first goal of Wednesday afternoon's game, but Saint Vincent College responded with three straight goals to grab a 3-1 victory over the Lions.

Vikrant Kumar (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) scored his first collegiate goal for Penn State Altoona (1-6). Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made five saves between the pipes for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona grabbed a 1-0 lead at 37:14, when a failed clearing attempt by the home team deflected off of Kumar and into the net.

But St. Vincent (3-4-1) tied the game just over five minutes later. Taking a pass from Nick Gaudy, Mark O'Grady sent a sharp angle shot from close to the end line into the lower right corner of the net to even the score 1-1.

Shortly after halftime, the Bearcats grabbed a 2-1 lead on Zach D'Amico's goal at 47:31. St. Vincent added an insurance tally at the 70:11 mark, when O'Grady broke away down the left side of the field and notched his second goal of the game to put his team ahead 3-1.

St. Vincent held a narrow 19-18 lead in total shots and an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Penn State Altoona led 8-3 in corner kicks.

Next up, Lions soccer opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this Saturday, September 23, when the team travels to Pitt-Bradford for a 1:00 p.m. game.
