Seniors Shine in Record-Setting Day for Lions

ALTOONA, Pa. – It was a prolific day for the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team on Saturday, as it set numerous team and individual records in a 12-0 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College at Spring Run Stadium.

As a team, Penn State Altoona (3-11, 3-5 AMCC) set new single game records for the most goals scored (12) and the most points recorded (28), while tying the record for the most shots (47) in a game.

Individually, Jordan Crist (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) had a banner day for the Lions with a career-high four goals and one assist. Crist set new single game team records for the most goals scored (4), most points recorded (9), and most shots attempted (11). With his performance on Saturday, he also ascended in several all-time team records, including moving into second place on the Lions' all-time goals scored list with 22 career goals.

Crist and fellow seniors Alhaji Umaru Koroma (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) and Emerson Mendes (Luanda, Angola/Luanda) appropriately led the charge for Penn State Altoona on the team's Senior Day. After being recognized in a pregame ceremony, the trio combined for six goals, 13 points, 11 shots on goal, and 17 shots attempted. Crist increased his team-leading goal total to seven, while Koroma and Mendes each scored their first goals of the season.

Evan Cardoza (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added one goal and one assist for the Lions. Joe Koontz (Everett, PA/Everett) got the start in goal and made two saves to pick up his first career win and first career shutout.

Crist drew first blood at 14:58 on a penalty kick goal, and Mendes made it 2-0 at 24:58 when he took a pass in the box from Cardoza and banked a shot off of the right goal post and into the net.

Erikson Miguel (Luanda, Angola/Semente do Saber) upped the Lions' lead to 3-0 with his tally at 29:06, his second goal of the season. Cardoza followed with his first collegiate goal at 39:19, when he fired a shot past the keeper following a deflected save.

Penn State Altoona proceeded to score eight second half goals.

Koroma converted on a penalty kick at 50:20 to make it 5-0. Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) netted his first collegiate goal at 53:17, gathering a throw-in from Kaleb Gahagan (Williamsburg, PA/Central) and scoring on a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to increase the Lions' advantage to 6-0.

Crist notched his second goal of the afternoon at 55:01, tapping a deflected save past the keeper and into the open net. Crist assisted on his team's next goal, sending a cross into the box, where Brant Aughenbaugh (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) was there to score his second goal of the season and boost his team's lead to 8-0 at 60:36.

Adam Lorence (Somerset, PA/Somerset) scored his first collegiate goal at 65:54, heading Richard Carey's (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) throw-in inside the box past the goalkeeper to make it 9-0.

Crist clinched the hat trick at 73:06, when he dribbled along the outside of the box and sent a shot past the keeper to up his team's advantage to 10-0. Marcus Das Chagas (New York City, NY/Fiorello H. LaGuardia) recorded his first career goal at 75:53, sending a short-range shot inside the box past the keeper. Crist capped the scoring, converting on a penalty kick at 76:55 for his fourth goal of the day.

The Lions held big advantages over Hilbert in shots (47-3), shots on goal (27-2), and corner kicks (6-0).

Penn State Altoona men's soccer, still in the hunt for a berth into the AMCC Tournament, travels for its final regular season game. On Tuesday, October 23, the Lions head to Pittsburgh to take on La Roche College at 3:15 p.m.
