Lions Overpowered by #10 Behrend
ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's soccer was defeated 7-1 by #10 Penn State Behrend in Saturday afternoon's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest.
The Lions' nationally-ranked conference opponent got at least one goal from five different players, led by Richard Blanchard, who recorded a hat trick. Behrend (12-1, 4-1 AMCC) posted advantages over Penn State Altoona in shots (25-9), shots on goal (15-1), and corner kicks (13-4).
Penn State Altoona (5-9-1, 3-3 AMCC) got its lone goal from Seif Magd (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven), whose tally was his fourth of the season. Evan Cardoza (Altoona, PA/Altoona) took a team-high four shots.
In goal, Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made eight saves for the Lions.
Penn State Altoona put the game's first goal on the board less than five minutes in, as Magd beat the Behrend keeper at 4:34 in a one-on-one situation to give his team a 1-0 lead.
But Behrend countered with four goals throughout the remainder of the first half. Blanchard tied things up at 12:03 when his six-yard direct kick found the back of the net, and he scored again at 22:38 off of a cross to put the home team up, 2-1. Goals from Michael DiCola and Nick Schwarzel increased Behrend's lead to 4-1 by the intermission.
Blanchard notched the hat trick early in the second half, getting past the defense and putting a shot past the keeper in a one-one-one at 52:49. Matthew Romesberg and Chase Stevenson each scored to add to Behrend's lead, making it 7-1 by the 74:24 mark.
Penn State Altoona men's soccer's next game is Tuesday, October 15, when the Lions will make the short drive to Cresson, Pa. to face AMCC rival Mount Aloysius College at 6:00 p.m.
