Waynesburg Gets Past Lions, 1-0

ALTOONA, Pa. – Waynesburg University dealt the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Monday evening in a non-conference tilt at Spring Run Stadium.

Penn State Altoona (5-4-1) played even with the visitors until midway through the second half, when the Lions were stung by a Yellow Jackets goal that proved to be the contest's lone tally.

Connor Jacobs scored for Waynesburg (9-4-1) in the 60th minute, and the visitors escaped with a narrow victory.

Sasha Mohoruk (State College, PA/State College) made his 10th start of the season at goalkeeper for the Lions and played a scoreless first half. Eli Slamka (Muncy, PA/Muncy) took over between the pipes in the second half and recorded four saves in the loss.

Ethan Firth (York, PA/Central York) had three shot attempts for Penn State Altoona, putting two on goal. Owen Myers (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and Daniel Persiko (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) finished with one shot on goal apiece.

Penn State Altoona and Waynesburg combined for just nine shot attempts during the first half, and the teams found themselves in a scoreless deadlock by halftime after a defense-dominated opening period.

But just under 15 minutes into the second half, Waynesburg took advantage of a corner kick and found the back of the net. A Yellow Jackets corner was sent into the box, where it found Taylor McFarland. McFarland headed the ball off of the crossbar, and the deflection came right to Jacobs, who headed the ball into the goal to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead at the 59:45 mark.

The Yellow Jackets nursed their lead the rest of the way to secure a win.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action for its next game, when the Lions will travel to Pittsburgh to take on first-year conference foe Carlow University. That contest is slated to start at 8 p.m. and will be held at Highmark Stadium.
