Late Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Win Over Panthers

ALTOONA, Pa. – A goal by Connor McBride (Philadelphia, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) with less than five minutes to play broke a scoreless tie in Saturday's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup at Spring Run Stadium, and the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team seized a 1-0 victory over visiting conference foe Pitt-Bradford.

McBride's goal – his second tally of the season – helped Penn State Altoona (7-4-1, 6-2 AMCC) to its second win in a row, as well as the team's fourth in its past five games.

Sasha Mohoruk (State College, PA/State College) made his 12th start of the season at goalkeeper for the Lions, registering his seventh win and sixth shutout. The junior made three saves between the pipes to keep the visitors off of the scoreboard.

Penn State Altoona held a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks during the first half. But despite some strong scoring chances, the Lions were unable to come up with a goal, and both teams went into halftime without a score.

The Lions continued to get quality looks in the second half, during which the physical play escalated from both squads. Penn State Altoona outshot Pitt-Bradford (1-12-1, 1-6-1 AMCC) by a 9-4 margin in the second period and also held a 5-2 advantage in corners, but the teams found themselves knotted at 0-0 until the closing minutes of the half.

A long free kick from Owen Myers (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) came into the box, and it found Jeff Strizl (Perkasie, PA/Perkasie) five yards from the goal. Strizl put a shot on net, but the Pitt-Bradford goalkeeper made a close-range save and deflected the ball to his right. However, McBride collected the rebound and tucked a shot inside the left post at 85:11 to give Penn State Altoona a 1-0 lead.

Penn State Altoona completed its sixth shutout win of the season by holding Pitt-Bradford scoreless the rest of the way.

The Lions finished their day with statistical advantages over Pitt-Bradford in shots (21-10), shots on goal (11-3), and corner kicks (9-2).

Daniel Persiko (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led all players in the game with six shot attempts and four shots on goal. Luke Hall (State College, PA/State College) and Strizl each finished with two shots on goal in three attempts, while Ethan Firth (York, PA/Central York), Ethan McDowell (Johnstown, PA/Johnstown Christian School), and McBride had one shot on goal apiece.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's soccer will close out its regular season with a home game against nearby AMCC rival Mount Aloysius College this upcoming Tuesday, October 24. That matchup is slated to start at 7 p.m.
