Lions Win Season-High 10 Events in Victory at Wells

AURORA, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona men's swimming posted a dominant performance on Tuesday afternoon, defeating non-conference opponent Wells College 73-3 at the Wells Aquatic Center.

The Lions racked up a season-high 10 first place finishes in the meet, winning every event. It marked the most first places recorded by the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team in a dual meet since the Lions had 13 first places on January 19, 2016 in a home meet versus Wells.

Andrew Lesnett (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) and Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) led the way for the Lions, as each swimmer finished the day with two individual first place finishes.

Lesnett won the first event of the men's meet, the 1000 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 11:48.52. He later took first in the 100 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 53.23.

Yaw grabbed first place in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:37.59. In the meet's next event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke, he earned another first place by finishing in 1:11.74.

Meanwhile, the Lions picked up five more first place finishes from five different swimmers, plus a relay event first place.

Tyler Stauss (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) triumphed in the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 2:12.21. Next up was Bryce Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), who won the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 25.34. Cooper Gilkey (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) secured first place in the next event, the 400 Yard IM, with a time of 5:13.01. Michael Begany (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) followed that with a first place finish in the 100 Yard Butterfly, clocking in at 1:14.53. One event later, Greg Landis (York, PA/West York) won the 100 Yard Backstroke by finishing in 1:05.74.

In the meet's final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the squad of Bauer, Gilkey, Stauss, and Landis came together to post a time of 1:43.31 to take first place.

Next up, Penn State Altoona's men's swimming team travels to Washington, D.C. this Friday, January 18 to face non-conference opponent Gallaudet University in a dual meet starting at 6:00 p.m.
