Men’s Swimming Defeats Hood 131-101 in Regular Season Finale

FREDERICK, Md. – Penn State Altoona men's swimming ended its 2019-20 regular season schedule on a winning note on Saturday afternoon, sinking non-conference opponent Hood College 131-101 at the Huntsinger Aquatics Center.

The victory represents the Lions' seventh dual meet win of the season, and it is also the team's fourth dual meet win in a row.

Penn State Altoona recorded eight first place finishes as a team in its win over Hood, including three individual first places by Isaac Swanson (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) and two by Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra).

Swanson won the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:47.16, coming just 0.11 seconds behind the current team record for that swim. He also took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 22.15, just 0.03 seconds behind his own team record for that event. Swanson's third win of the day came in the 100 Yard Backstroke, in which he clocked in at 54.62.

Yaw took first place in the 100 Yard Butterfly, hitting the pad at 56.44 to win the event. He also triumphed in the 50 Yard Butterfly with a time of 24.67.

Tyler Stauss (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) won the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 11:45.85. Bryce Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) placed first in the 50 Yard Backstroke, posting a time of 30.39. Kieran McKee (York, PA/West York) finished atop the standings in the 100 Yard Freestyle, earning a time of 50.21.

The Lions also nabbed several runner-up finishes during the meet.

In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Swanson, Aravind Gnanasekaran (King of Prussia, PA/Methacton), Yaw, and Bauer came together with a time of 1:46.73 to place second, coming in just 0.34 seconds behind the first place squad.

Gnanasekaran also had two second place finishes individually. In the 50 Yard Breaststroke, his time of 31.55 put him in runner-up status. He also took second place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.93.

Michael Begany (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) was the runner-up finisher in the 50 Yard Backstroke with a time of 32.78. Taylor Bohn (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) clinched second place in the 100 Yard Backstroke, clocking in at 1:00.65.

The Lions finished the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, which saw the team of Bauer, McKee, Stauss, and Bohn record a total time of 1:36.37.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team will prepare for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, which will be held February 19-22 at the Webster Aquatic Center in Webster, N.Y.
