Men's Swimming Sets Three More Records, Keeps Third at AMCC Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team remained in third place out of four conference teams on Thursday, as the second day of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships at Webster Aquatic Center came to an end.

Through two finals sessions, the Lions totaled 228 points to place third in the AMCC, ranking ahead of Pitt-Bradford and its team total of 138 points. Penn State Altoona set three more new team records on Thursday, after establishing two new records during Wednesday's finals.

Penn State Behrend was the top AMCC team at the end of Thursday's round with a total of 354.5 points, and Alfred State College was in second with 344 points. Hartwick College was the top team overall, ranking first in the pack of combined AMCC-Empire 8 teams with 374 points.

Caden Traggiai (Sarver, PA/Knoch) started Thursday's finals session on a high note, setting a new team record in the 500 Yard Freestyle while finishing as the AMCC silver medalist. Traggiai recorded a time of 4:39.85 in the 'A' final of the swim, ranking second in the conference and overall, and also setting a new Penn State Altoona men's swimming record by surpassing the previous mark of 4:45.86, set by former Lion Isaac Swanson on February 17, 2022 in that season's AMCC Championships.

Next was the 200 Yard IM, where two different Lion swimmers competed. In the 'A' final of the swim, Adam Marawan (Dubai, UAE/GEMS Dubai American Academy) wrapped up third place in the AMCC and fifth overall by clocking in at 1:58.20. Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) competed in the 'B' final, placing eighth in the AMCC with a time of 2:06.09.

Four different Penn State Altoona swimmers took part in the 50 Yard Freestyle finals. Adam Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) led the way during the 'A' final, earning second place in the AMCC and fourth place overall by finishing in 21.69. That time set another Penn State Altoona men's swimming team record, eking out the previous record of 21.74 set by teammate Marawan during this past November's Malone University Invitational.

Competing in the 'B' final of the 50 Yard Freestyle, Lincoln Johnson (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) took eighth place in the AMCC with a time of 22.16, Rocco Solimeo (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) was 10th in the conference by posting a time of 22.59, and Eugene Heyman (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) clocked in at 22.71 to place 12th in the AMCC.

The evening finished with the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, and Penn State Altoona picked up another second-place AMCC finish while setting its third new team record of the night. In the 'A' final of that event, the team of Johnson, Marawan, Solimeo, and Dotts compiled a time of 1:25.77 to earn the AMCC's runner-up spot and also finish second overall. That time bested the previous Penn State Altoona men's swimming record of 1:27.59, set by former Lions Isaac Swanson, Kieran McKee, Taylor Bohn, and Tanner Yaw from the 2020 AMCC Championships on February 20 of that year.

The Lions also had a squad compete in the 'B' final of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. The foursome of Heyman, Nicolas Louis (Queens, NY/Rabun Gap Naccochee), Hunter McMullen (Colver, PA/Central Cambria), and Adam McGlynn (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) earned a total time of 1:30.26 to grab seventh in the AMCC.

Day three of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Friday, February 16, beginning with 10 a.m. preliminaries and followed by the finals session at 5 p.m. On Friday night's docket is the 400 Yard IM, 100 Yard Butterfly, 200 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke, 100 Yard Backstroke, and 400 Yard Medley Relay.
