Men's Tennis Defeated 8-1 at W&J

MCMURRAY, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's tennis was handed an 8-1 loss by non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday evening at the Peters Township Tennis Center.

W&J (1-1) took the early lead in the match, winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches each by a score of 8-2. Penn State Altoona (1-5) got its lone point of the day in the No. 3 doubles match, where the duo of Zachary Guasto (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place)/Kirk Eichenlaub (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) posted an 8-0 whitewash of their opponents.

But the Presidents went on to sweep singles play, putting six wins on the board. Eichenlaub and Andrew Ung (Upper Chichester, PA/Chichester) each suffered close losses in their singles matches during back-and-forth ordeals with their opponents. In the No. 4 singles tilt, Eichenlaub won the first set 6-1 before losing 6-3 in the next set and being edged 10-8 in the tiebreaker. In No. 5 singles, Ung prevailed 6-1 in the opening set before falling 6-3 in the second set and 10-7 in the tiebreak.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis gets right back at it tomorrow, Sunday, March 1, hosting non-conference opponent Westminster College for a match starting at 1:00 p.m. at The Summit Tennis and Athletic Center in Altoona.
