Lions Defeat Mounties 8-1 on Senior Day

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team wrapped up its three-match weekend on Sunday afternoon at the Gorilla House Gym, where the Lions posted an 8-1 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College.

The date also marked Penn State Altoona's Senior Day, as the team recognized senior players Micah Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PA Cyber) and Kirk Eichenlaub (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) on their collegiate tennis careers with the program.

Sunday's match also concludes Penn State Altoona's (4-5, 4-1 AMCC) 2021-22 regular season conference schedule, as the Lions finish with four wins in five AMCC matches. Sunday's victory ensures that the Lions will have a spot in the AMCC Championship Tournament, which will be held in April.

Penn State Altoona swept Mount Aloysius (1-8, 1-4 AMCC) in doubles play to open the match with a 3-0 lead. Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Tommy Davis (Memphis, TN/Collierville) took the No. 1 doubles match 8-3 for their fourth win of the season as a tandem, and Brinker/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) prevailed 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles spot for their team-high fifth doubles victory of the season. Eichenlaub/Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain) won by forfeit in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Lions followed that up by winning five out of six in singles play to finish with a comfortable seven-point win over Mount Aloysius. Davis won his fourth singles match of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of his opponent in the No. 2 match, and Hess recorded his team-best seventh singles win of the year with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 match. Brinker won in No. 4 singles by a 7-5, 6-1 decision that represented his fifth singles win of the season, and Eichenlaub followed with his sixth singles win of the year, a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over his opponent in the No. 5 match. Jake Irwin (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) won the No. 6 match by forfeit.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will dip back into non-conference play, as the Lions will prepare for the AMCC Tournament in April, the date, time, and location of which will be announced at a future time. Penn State Altoona's next match is on the road Saturday, April 2, when the Lions will travel to face non-conference foe Geneva College at 12:00 p.m.
