Lions Edged 5-4 in Fall Men’s Tennis Opener

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team played its first of two fall non-conference matches on Wednesday afternoon at the Adler Tennis Courts, and the Lions were defeated 5-4 by Saint Vincent College.

Penn State Altoona (0-1) found itself in good position after doubles play, when the Lions won two out of three to grab a one-point lead in the overall match. In No. 1 doubles, Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) picked up an 8-2 victory. In the No. 2 spot, the duo of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) won 8-3. The doubles wins for Chronister and Carey were the first of their collegiate careers.

But St. Vincent (3-0) rallied to win four out of six in singles play, as the Bearcats came back to win the match by one point.

Hess won the No. 1 match by a 6-3, 6-4 decision, and Chronister also prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match for his first collegiate victory.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will host one more non-conference match before breaking until the spring semester. The Lions will take on Washington & Jefferson College at home on Thursday, October 12 at 4 p.m.
