Men’s Tennis Sweeps Mounties for Second AMCC Win

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team earned its second straight 9-0 win, as the Lions swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College on Tuesday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.

Penn State Altoona (2-3, 2-0 AMCC) wrapped up its second conference win of the season with a commanding victory over its nearby league rival, Mount Aloysius (1-10, 0-2 AMCC).

The Lions began the match by winning all three doubles matches, including blanking the Mounties in two of them.

In the No. 1 spot, Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) improved to 5-0 together this season with an 8-0 victory over their opponents. The duo of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) picked up their fourth win, defeating their opponents by a score of 8-2 in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 slot, Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) prevailed 8-0 to pick up their second win together.

Penn State Altoona carried its dominance into singles play, where the Lions surrendered just eight games to Mount Aloysius in 12 sets.

Hess nabbed his fourth singles win of the season in the No. 1 match, where he triumphed 6-0, 6-3, and Chronister secured his team-leading fifth singles victory by posting a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match. Beard got his second win of the season in the No. 3 match, in which he notched a 6-0, 6-1 decision over his opponent. Carey also earned his second victory of the season, as he played to a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 4 match. Hibbs prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match for his second win of the season, and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) secured his second win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 spot.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis dips back into non-conference play for its next match, when the Lions will return home to host Penn College this Thursday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
