Lions Cruise Past Wildcats for Third Straight Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team returned to campus on Thursday afternoon for its first home match at Ivyside since the fall semester, and the Lions earned their third consecutive victory with an 8-1 defeat of non-conference opponent Penn College.

Penn State Altoona (3-3) got another strong team performance, winning all three doubles matches and five out of six in singles play to hand the Wildcats (0-4) the loss.

In the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) improved their record to 6-0 together this season by defeating their opponents 8-1. Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) also posted an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 match for their fifth win together. In No. 3 doubles, Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) prevailed 8-1 for their third win.

Penn State Altoona continued to rack up wins in singles play, claiming victory in matches two through six. Chronister whitewashed his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 singles match to boost his singles record to 6-0 this season. Beard secured a 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 3 match for his third victory, and Hibbs pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 decision over his opponent in the No. 4 slot to clinch his third win. Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) got his third win by defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-2 in No. 5 singles, and Grot provided the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in the No. 6 match for his first collegiate singles win.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis will travel for its next match, as the Lions are slated to head to Frederick, Md. to face non-conference opponent Hood College on Monday, April 1 at 2 p.m.
