Men’s Tennis Blanks Waynesburg for Fifth Straight Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team reeled off its fifth consecutive win on Thursday, blanking non-conference opponent Waynesburg University 9-0 at The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

Penn State Altoona (5-3) won all three doubles matches, then swept the six singles matches to shut out Waynesburg (1-7) on the day.

In doubles, the duo of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) started things off by improving to 8-0 together this season with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles spot. Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) shut their opponents out in the No. 2 match, winning 8-0 for their first victory together. In the No. 3 doubles match, the tandem of Parth Raval (Mumbai, India/Thakur Polytechnic)/Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) earned their first win together this season with an 8-1 triumph.

The Lions kept things rolling into singles play, where the team won all six matches. Hess prevailed 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 match for his sixth win of the season, and Chronister moved his record to 8-0 this year by topping his opponent 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot. Beard followed with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the No. 3 match for his fifth win, and Hibbs picked up his fourth victory by defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) posted a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 5 singles match for his fourth victory of the season, and Grot won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot to improve his record to 3-0.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to action this Saturday, April 6, when the Lions will return to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play with a home match against Pitt-Greensburg. That day, Penn State Altoona will host the Bobcats for a 1 p.m. match at the Gorilla House Gym in Altoona.
