Men’s Volleyball Goes 2-1 in Saturday Matches at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Penn State Altoona men's volleyball finished up its competition in the Mount Union Purple Raider Rumble on Saturday, recording 3-0 wins over Thomas More College and the University of Mount Union while falling 3-0 to Fontbonne University.

Penn State Altoona (5-4) wrapped up the two-day event with a 3-1 record, winning Friday evening's match and taking two out of three on Saturday.

Match One

The Lions committed just nine errors while posting a team attack percentage of .474 in a dominant 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 victory over Thomas More College (1-11). The team's .474 attack percentage is the second-best in a match in Penn State Altoona men's volleyball history.

Jon Ramsey (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) totaled a team-high seven kills for the Lions, and he also had one of his team's two solo blocks and tied for the team-high in service aces with two. Daniel Jordan (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) added six kills, two aces, and two digs.

Ben Beaver (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and Nathaniel Reinert (State College, PA/State College) finished with four kills each, while Brandon Caffrey (Northampton, PA/Northampton), Kaleb Gahagan (Williamsburg, PA/Central), Mirko Pandini (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe), and Ben Remlinger (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) tallied three kills apiece. Dan Downs (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) totaled two kills and one solo block, and Brian Sheddy (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) notched two aces.

Danny Dry (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) recorded a team-high 15 set assists while adding two digs, and Kyle Whiteman (Northampton, PA/Northampton) had nine assists, two digs, and an ace. Tyler Chan (Framingham, MA/Framingham) led all players in the match with eight digs.

Match Two

Penn State Altoona struggled against Fontbonne (8-0) in the Lions' second match of the day, as the Griffins stayed undefeated with a 29-15, 25-20, 25-14 sweep.

Sheddy led all players in the match with 11 kills, and he also chipped in four digs. Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had a team-high three total blocks (one solo block, two block assists) to go along with five kills, and Downs also recorded five kills. Beaver finished with four kills, four digs, one ace, and one solo block.

Whiteman led Penn State Altoona in assists with 15, and he also contributed four digs. Dry tallied 11 assists to go along with a pair of digs and a service ace. Chan again led the Lions in digs, posting nine.

Match Three

Penn State Altoona bounced back in its last match of the weekend to sweep host school Mount Union (5-11) 25-22, 25-13, and 25-23.

Beaver had a team-best eight kills to go along with two total blocks (one solo block, one block assist) and three digs, and Downs and Sheddy added kills with seven apiece. Downs also contributed four total blocks (two solo blocks, two block assists) and one ace, while Sheddy had four digs, a team-high two aces, and one solo block. Jordan tied Downs for the team-high in blocks, accumulating four (two solo blocks, two block assists).

Dry led the team in assists with 15, and he added four digs. Whiteman recorded 11 assists, three digs, and one ace. Chan finished with a match-high 14 digs.

Penn State Altoona men's volleyball returns home for its next match, when it will host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hiram College in the Adler Arena on Friday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m.
