Westminster’s Walkoffs Sink Lady Lions

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Penn State Altoona softball suffered a couple tough losses on Thursday afternoon, as non-conference opponent Westminster College posted a pair of walkoff wins to sweep the Lady Lions.

Westminster (8-12) rallied for a 3-2 win in game one of the doubleheader. In game two, the Titans scored the game's only run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Penn State Altoona (8-10) 1-0.

Game One: Westminster 3, Penn State Altoona 2

Penn State Altoona appeared poised to win, holding a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. But Westminster rallied for two runs in that frame, walking off as winners in game one of the doubleheader.

Meghan Marasti (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) went 3-for-4 with a run scored while going 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

Ellie Leyo (Irvona, PA/Glendale) was 2-for-3 with a walk, while Abby Showers (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) was 2-for-4 with one run batted in.

Sarah Gearhart (McVeytown, PA/Mount Union) pitched a complete game for the Lady Lions, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out a pair.

Penn State Altoona broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when Giedroc's RBI single to center scored Marasti to make it 1-0.

After Westminster picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, the Lady Lions got back into the lead in the top half of the seventh. Showers led off with a double, then moved up to third on Marasti's base hit. After Giedroc singled to load the bases, Sidney Lewis (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) grounded out to third, driving in Showers to make it 2-1.

But the Titans scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to grab the victory in game one.

Game Two: Westminster 1, Penn State Altoona 0

The Lady Lions found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless battle through six-and-a-half innings, but Westminster loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and won when a two-out walk brought the game's lone run home.

Brittney Dellaquila (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) took the tough-luck loss in the circle, allowing just one run while scattering eight hits and walking three batters. In 6 2/3 innings of work, she struck out three.

Showers and Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough) each finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Lions, and Giedroc was 1-for-3 to account for Penn State Altoona's other hit.

Westminster loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning following three consecutive singles. After a strikeout, a walk brought in the game's only run to help the Titans secure the doubleheader sweep.

Penn State Altoona softball gets back into Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, April 6, when the Lady Lions will travel to play Medaille College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
