Softball Swept in Doubleheader at Mount Aloysius

CRESSON, Pa. – Penn State Altoona softball was handed a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference losses on Wednesday afternoon, when the Lady Lions were swept in a doubleheader by Mount Aloysius College.

Penn State Altoona (15-17, 5-9 AMCC) lost 9-1 in game one, then took a 4-1 loss in game two. The Lady Lions struggled to find their bats, getting just five hits to score two runs in the doubleheader.

Game One: Mount Aloysius 9, Penn State Altoona 1 (Final/6 innings)

Mount Aloysius (27-8, 13-3 AMCC) prevailed in a run-rule-shortened game one of the doubleheader. The Lady Mounties limited Penn State Altoona to only one run on three hits, while producing nine runs on 10 hits themselves.

Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) accounted for two of Penn State Altoona's three hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Brittney Dellaquila (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was 1-for-3, and Jessica Willits (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) scored a run.

Sidney Lewis (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) started in the circle and took the loss, pitching two innings and yielding three earned runs. Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) pitched the remainder of the game, going 3 2/3 innings and surrendering three runs.

Mount Aloysius jumped on top in the bottom of the first, when Lydia DeFazio's RBI double to left put her team up. In the second, Kara Pisczek's RBI single and Kayla Hopkins' three-run double brought in four more runs, and Hopkins scored on an error to make it 6-0.

Penn State Altoona got on the board in the top of the fifth, when Willits led off the frame by reaching on an error and later scoring on another error.

But Mount Aloysius got that run back in the bottom half of the fifth, when Abby Reitz's RBI single to right made it 7-1. The Lady Mounties brought the eight-run rule into effect in the sixth, when Emily Cochran's RBI double and Karlie Clark's RBI single gave the home team an eight-run lead, 9-1.

Game Two: Mount Aloysius 4, Penn State Altoona 1

Penn State Altoona avoided giving up the big inning to Mount Aloysius, but the Lady Lions' bats were still quiet, recording just two hits and one run.

Abby Showers (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Giedroc was 1-for-3 with one run batted in.

Dellaquila got the start at pitcher and took the loss in a complete game effort, giving up three earned runs in six innings of work.

The Lady Mounties established a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, when Pisczek's RBI double to left-center and DeFazio's RBI single through the left side got the home team on the scoreboard.

Mount Aloysius doubled its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Courtney Link's RBI double to left-center drove in one run, and she later scored on an error to make it 4-0.

Giedroc's two-out RBI single to center put a run on the board for Penn State Altoona, narrowing Mount Aloysius' lead to 4-1.

But Penn State Altoona was unable to do any further damage, as Mount Aloysius finished the game with a three-run victory.

Penn State Altoona softball hits the road for more AMCC games this Friday, April 26, when the Lady Lions will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Medaille College in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
