Lady Lions Shut Out in AMCC Tourney Opener

ERIE, Pa. – No. 6 seed Penn State Altoona softball was blanked 6-0 on Friday morning by No. 3 Pitt-Bradford in the opening game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, hosted at Penn State Behrend.

With the loss, the Lady Lions (18-19) drop into the losers bracket and will play in an elimination game tomorrow, Saturday, May 4. That game – the second of the day on Saturday – will be against either No. 1 Penn State Behrend, No. 4 Franciscan University, or No. 5 D'Youville College, based on Friday's results.

Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle), Meghan Marasti (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn-Trafford), Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough), and Alexis Secrest (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) each finished 1-for-3 at the plate for Penn State Altoona, with Marasti also recording a stolen base.

Sidney Lewis (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) started in the circle and was handed the loss in a complete game effort, yielding six runs over six innings.

Pitt-Bradford (23-16) took an early lead, getting one run across in the bottom of the first inning when Liz Dzurisin's RBI single to right-center drove in the game's first score.

Dzurisin struck again for the Lady Panthers in the bottom of the third, when her run-scoring base hit to left field made it 2-0.

Pitt-Bradford increased its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth on Gabby Carpenter's two-run double to left. The Lady Panthers scored twice more in the fifth, using Madison East's RBI triple to center and Lindsey Hull's RBI groundout to shortstop to make it 6-0.
