Softball Eliminated from AMCC Tournament

ERIE, Pa. – No. 6 seed Penn State Altoona softball's postseason run came to an end on Saturday, when the Lady Lions lost 9-0 in five innings to No. 1 Penn State Behrend during day two of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.

The Lady Lions (18-20) were held to just one hit, while top-seeded Behrend (26-10) stamped out nine runs and ended the game early via the eight-run rule.

At the conclusion of the game, senior shortstop Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) and junior third baseman Abby Showers (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) were named as Penn State Altoona's representatives to the AMCC All-Tournament team for the conference's weekend playoff tournament.

Showers accounted for Penn State Altoona's lone hit on Saturday, going 1-for-1 with a double. Sidney Lewis (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) pitched a complete game and took the loss, yielding nine runs in four innings while striking out a pair of batters.

Behrend got on the board in the bottom of the second, when they plated four runs. Kylee Bundy's RBI single down the left field line opened the scoring, and Bundy later scored on an error to make it 2-0. The home team increased its lead to 4-0 on Katie Gozzard's two-run double to center.

RBI triples from Kristen Kargol and Bundy upped Behrend's lead to 6-0 in the third inning.

Behrend scored three more runs in the fourth, getting a two-run single to right from Alayna Derzak and an RBI double to right by Kargol.

Penn State Altoona was unable to score in the top of the fifth to avoid the eight-run rule, and the game ended with Behrend moving on in the tournament and the Lady Lions' season coming to an end.
