Softball Splits Day Two Action at Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona softball team added one win and one loss to its record on Thursday, competing in its second day at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Sports Complex.

The Lions (1-2) shut out Clark University 3-0 in game one, then suffered a 5-1 loss to Bethany College in game two.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 3, Clark 0

Penn State Altoona started its day with a shutout of Clark (2-5). The Lions scored two in the first and added one in the sixth, while limiting Clark to just four hits.

Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) picked up her first collegiate win with a complete game effort. In seven innings, the right-hander allowed just four hits while walking none and allowing no runs. She also recorded four strikeouts.

At the plate, Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County), Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda), and Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) finished with one hit apiece. Hoppel, Storm, and Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) all had an RBI.

Penn State Altoona got two runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Fisher led off the frame with a base hit, and Colledge reached on an error to put two runners aboard. Hoppel followed with a run-scoring single, and Feathers' fielder's choice brought in another run to make it 2-0.

The score remained until the sixth, when Penn State Altoona tacked on one more run. Colledge led off the inning with a double, moved up to second on Hoppel's sacrifice, and scored on Storm's two-out single to make it 3-0.

Game Two: Bethany 5, Penn State Altoona 1

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but Bethany (8-0) quickly grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. The Bison scored two in the first, one in the second, and added two more in the fifth.

Colledge had two of Penn State Altoona's five hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Feathers was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Hoppel was also 1-for-3, and Lauck was 1-for-2 with a walk. Storm walked twice.

Maynard started at pitcher for the Lions and suffered the loss after tossing the first 1/3 inning and yielding a pair of runs. Brianna Bone (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) pitched the next 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing just one run, two hits, and a walk while recording two strikeouts.

Fisher pitched 2/3 inning after Bone, and Nau finished the game with a 1 1/3 scoreless inning appearance.

Penn State Altoona scored its lone run in the top of the first inning. Colledge reached on a one-out double and later scored on Feathers' two-out base hit.

But Bethany grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first, when the Bison scored runs on a bases-loaded walks by Haley Eyler and Katelyn Ziems. Bethany added to its lead with a run in the second, then two more in the fifth, to increase its advantage to 5-1.

Penn State Altoona softball returns to action tomorrow, Friday, March 8, taking on Baruch College and North Central University at the Lee County Sports Complex. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 9 a.m.
