Women’s Bowling Places Ninth in First AMCC Round Robin

GREENSBURG, Pa. – At the end of the first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference round robin weekend of the regular season, hosted by Pitt-Greensburg at Hillview Lanes, the Penn State Altoona women's bowling team finished in ninth place out of 11 conference teams.

Medaille University won a tiebreaker over Saint Vincent College to take first place by the conclusion of the weekend. The Mavericks dropped 8,877 pins and had a 9-1 head-to-head record, while St. Vincent totaled 8,912 pins and finished with a 9-1 record. New Jersey City University placed third with 8,319 pins and a 7-3 record.

Competing in five more traditional team format matches on Sunday, Penn State Altoona suffered five head-to-head losses while dropping 3,314 pins as a team. The Lions finished in ninth with a two-day, 10-match total of 6,824 pins, ranking ahead of 10th-place La Roche University (6,809 pins) and 11th-place Pitt-Greensburg (6,802 pins). Penn State Altoona compiled a 3-7 record across Saturday and Sunday's matches.

Chloe Mazza (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) led Penn State Altoona in pinfall on Sunday, dropping 656 pins across four games to average 164.0 per game. She also rolled the team's high score on the day with a 181 against William Smith College. After Saturday and Sunday's rounds combined, Mazza finished 27th out of 73 individual bowlers at the event with a 164.56 average per game, and she registered a two-day pinfall of 1,481.

Kennedie Lauver (New Berlin, PA/Mifflinburg) put down 646 pins in four games during Sunday's action, averaging 161.5 per game. She ranked a team-best 22nd individually in scoring average at the end of the weekend, averaging 168.11 per game and totaling 1,513 pins.

Kaitlyn Estright (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) bowled in four games on Sunday and finished with a pinfall of 548, averaging 137.0 per game. Brooke Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) dropped 460 pins in three games, finishing the day with a 153.3 average, and Isabelle Forcey (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) totaled 459 pins in four games on Sunday to finish the day with a 114.75 average.

Breanna Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) rolled three games on Sunday and dropped 351 pins, averaging 117.0 per game. Angela Bunk (Long Beach Island, NJ/Southern Regional) and Maddy Sosko (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) each bowled one game, with Bunk totaling 95 pins and Sosko shooting 99.

The Lions started Sunday's round against Pitt-Bradford, and the Panthers posted an 802-697 defeat of Penn State Altoona. Lauver shot 160 to lead the Lions in the match, Mazza had 154, and Breanna Yarnall scored 146.

Next, Penn State Altoona lost to first-place St. Vincent by a score of 971-667. Lauver scored a team-high 171, while Brooke Yarnall dropped 152.

The Lions faced Medaille, the second-place team, in their third match of the day, and the Mavericks prevailed 970-724. Estright shot a team-high 168 for Penn State Altoona, while Mazza scored a 160 and Forcey finished with 152.

Penn State Altoona suffered its tightest loss of the day against Hilbert College in the next match, as the Hawks came out on top by just 10 pins, 733-723. Brooke Yarnall scored a team-best 163 in the match, followed by Mazza's 161 and Lauver's 157.

The Lions finished the day against William Smith, falling 618-598. Mazza shot 181 to lead Penn State Altoona, while Lauver put down 158.

"On our final two matches of the day, the ladies fought back to keep the match close," said Penn State Altoona head coach Elizabeth Rhodes. "They could've let a couple bad frames get them down, but they battled back to keep the match close, even though they came up with losses."

Penn State Altoona women's bowling returns to non-conference play for its next event, when the Lions will travel back to Westmoreland County next Saturday, February 11 to compete in the annual Br. Pat Lacey Memorial Tournament, hosted by St. Vincent at Lincoln Lanes in Latrobe. The day's action is expected to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
