Bowling Finishes Season in Mountie Classic

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling team ended its 2022-23 schedule by competing in the Mid-State Mountie Classic, hosted by Mount Aloysius College on Saturday and Sunday at the F.A. Gerhart Lanes at the Bavarian Aid Society.

Penn State Altoona finished the two-day tournament in fifth place with an 0-6 head-to-head record. Division I Wright State University went 6-0 to win the weekend.

Prior to Sunday's round, Penn State Altoona senior Kaitlyn Estright (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) was recognized in a Senior Day ceremony, capping her four-year career with the Lions bowling program.

"Today, we did Senior Day for Kaitlyn. We battled hard against the Mount in our last match of the weekend to try and clinch the win, but it didn't happen," said Penn State Altoona head coach Elizabeth Rhodes. "I'm proud of each of these young ladies for not giving up and keeping a positive attitude through this whole season."

Saturday, Mar. 4: Traditional team format matches

Penn State Altoona started the two-day Mountie Classic by competing in four traditional team format matches on Saturday, facing Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponents Penn State Behrend, Mount Aloysius, and La Roche University, as well as Division II foe Roberts Wesleyan College.

Kennedie Lauver (New Berlin, PA/Mifflinburg) and Breanna Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) both put their names in the Penn State Altoona women's bowling record books during Saturday's round. Lauver bowled a 234 in the Lions' second match of the day to set a new program record for the highest individual game score in a traditional format match. Yarnall rolled a 221 in her team's first match, tying for the second-best individual game score in team history.

In its first match of the day, Penn State Altoona lost 821-769 to Behrend. Yarnall led the way with her 221, and Lauver bowled 168. Next, the Lions suffered an 803-779 loss to host Mount Aloysius. Lauver scored 234, and Yarnall rolled a 160.

Penn State Altoona took on Roberts Wesleyan in its third match, which it lost 900-748. Brooke Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) led the Lions in that match with 179.

Penn State Altoona wrapped up the opening day of the classic with a tight loss, falling 742-719 to La Roche. Chloe Mazza (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) bowled a match-high 166 for the Lions, while Lauver scored a 152.

By the conclusion of Saturday's round, Lauver led Penn State Altoona in total pinfall and average, dropping 702 pins for an average of 175.5 per game while bowling all four games for her team. Breanna Yarnall also competed in all four games and ranked second on the team in both with 658 pins and a 164.5 per game average.

Brooke Yarnall rolled in three games, dropping 446 pins for a per-game average of 148.67. Mazza bowled three games, totaling 439 pins and averaging 146.3 per game. Isabelle Forcey (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) competed in three games, putting down 382 pins and averaging 127.3 per game.

Estright totaled 266 pins across two games, averaging 133.0 per game. Maddy Sosko (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) rolled 122 in her lone game of the day.

Sunday, Mar. 5: Best-of-seven baker matches

Penn State Altoona finished its season by taking on La Roche and Mount Aloysius in best-of-seven baker matches on Sunday.

The Lions opened the day versus La Roche, losing 4-1. The Redhawks earned a close 135-133 win in the first game, but Penn State Altoona bounced back to tie the match score at 1-1 with a 161-125 victory in the second game. However, La Roche reeled off wins of 174-139, 148-131, and 172-125 in the next three games to win the match.

In its final competition of the year, Penn State Altoona lost a nailbiter to Mount Aloysius by a final score of 4-3. The Mounties won the first two games by scores of 190-133 and 155-125 before Penn State Altoona got on the board with a 154-141 victory in the third game. Mount Aloysius took game four 154-139, but the Lions stayed alive with a 169-160 win in the fifth. Penn State Altoona tied the match at 3-3 with a 166-132 triumph in the sixth game, but Mount Aloysius ultimately pulled out the match win with a 168-155 victory in the decisive seventh game.

Lauver led the Lions with an 18.88 baker average in Sunday's action, while Mazza posted a 15.96 baker average.
