Lions Go 1-3 in Second Day of Bobcat Classic

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling team capped its season-opening weekend on Sunday, competing in the second and final day of the Bobcat Baker Classic, hosted by Pitt-Greensburg at Lokay Lanes.

Competing in another round of five-game baker matches, Penn State Altoona posted one win and three losses on Sunday. The Lions finished the weekend with a 2-7 record in the two-day event and finished in seventh place out of nine teams.

"I'm very proud with how the girls battled back from last place to seventh for this tournament," said Penn State Altoona women's bowling head coach Elizabeth Rhodes. "We have some work to do to get prepared for the conference round robin, but the girls will be ready."

Penn State Altoona started its day with a one-pin victory, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend 719-718 in a hotly contested match. Behrend started the match with a 155-143 advantage in pins by the conclusion of the first game, but Penn State Altoona answered by outscoring Behrend 142-121 in the second game. Behrend expanded its lead with a 161-127 lead in pins during the third game, but the Lions kept hanging around after the fourth game, during which they edged Behrend 146-138. Penn State Altoona pulled ahead in the fifth and final game, posting a 161-143 pinfall advantage to beat Behrend by one.

In their second match of the day, the Lions were dealt a 717-685 loss by AMCC foe La Roche University. Penn State Altoona rolled well in the first game, scoring 157 pins, and the Lions also topped La Roche by scores of 136-127 and 133-130 in the third and fifth games, respectively. But the Redhawks ultimately had the overall pinfall advantage over Penn State Altoona by the end of the match, winning it by 32.

Penn State Altoona had its best team score of the day in the third match, but the Lions still suffered an 812-726 loss to AMCC opponent Saint Vincent College. Penn State Altoona's total score was helped by a 171 in game two, which was the Lions' high score in a game on the day. But the Bearcats held pinfall advantages over Penn State Altoona in four out of five games to finish with a comfortable win.

Penn State Altoona's final match came against non-conference opponent Ursuline College, which defeated the Lions 778-649. Penn State Altoona got off to a good start by establishing a 137-118 lead in pins by the end of game one, but Ursuline led in the next four games to top the Lions.

Penn State Altoona women's bowling will head into conference play for its next event, as the Lions will compete in the first of two regular season AMCC round robins. The three-day tournament, which will consist of baker format matches, will be hosted by Hilbert College at Classic Lanes in Kenmore, N.Y. The round robin comes at the beginning of Thanksgiving break for Penn State Altoona, as the tournament is scheduled for Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19.
