Women’s Bowling Wins Two in Day Two at SFU Invite

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's bowling got into the win column twice on Saturday, during day two of this weekend's Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational at Holiday Bowl.

After Friday's opening round of traditional team format matches, Saturday's action shifted to five-game baker matches. Penn State Altoona went 2-3 on the day, defeating fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College twice while losing to AMCC foes Pitt-Bradford and Saint Vincent College, as well as Division I Mount Saint Mary's University.

By the conclusion of Saturday's round, Penn State Altoona remained in ninth place out of 10 teams. The Lions hold a 2-8 head-to-head record through two days, as well as a combined pinfall of 7,392, including dropping 3,663 pins in Saturday's baker matches.

Duquesne University continued to hold first place on the team leaderboard with a two-day combined total of 9,548 pins. Mount St. Mary's was in second place with 9,499 pins, and Valparaiso University was third with 9,236 pins.

"The girls all pulled together to get the two wins today," said Penn State Altoona head coach Elizabeth Rhodes. "In our final match against Mount Aloysius, we went into a roll-off, and we rallied and pulled off the win. I am very proud of each of them."

Penn State Altoona faced its nearby AMCC opponent, Mount Aloysius, in the Lions' first match of the day. Despite the Mounties outscoring the Lions by scores of 149-145, 145-126, and 137-123 in the first, third, and fifth games, Penn State Altoona was able to win the overall match 710-664, thanks to strong pinfall advantages of 163-131 and 153-102 in the second and fourth games.

The Lions went up against another AMCC team, Pitt-Bradford, in their second match of the day. The Panthers held scoring advantages of 196-163, 134-129, 171-157, and 201-181 in the first four games, and after Penn State Altoona posted a 140-126 edge in the fifth, Pitt-Bradford came away with an 828-770 victory over the Lions.

Penn State Altoona was matched up against Division I opponent Mount St. Mary's in its third match of Saturday's round. The Lions recorded pinfall advantages in the second and fourth games by respective scores of 165-139 and 154-140, but Mount St. Mary's outscored Penn State Altoona in the other three games to win the match 811-718.

Penn State Altoona played St. Vincent in match number four, and the Bearcats earned an 890-674 victory over the Lions after outscoring them in all five games.

The Lions finished the day on a winning note in a rematch against Mount Aloysius that saw Penn State Altoona pull out an exciting victory on a tiebreaker. Penn State Altoona established an early lead, outscoring the Mounties 170-161 and 181-117 in the first two games. However, Mount Aloysius rallied by posting pinfall leads of 168-116, 177-170, and 168-154 over the Lions in the next three games, and the two teams found themselves deadlocked at 791-791. But Penn State Altoona secured the win in the tiebreaker, outscoring Mount Aloysius 69-48 to clinch its second head-to-head victory of the day and fifth of the season.

Penn State Altoona women's bowling returns to the lanes tomorrow, Sunday, January 28, for the third and final day of the Red Flash Invitational. Sunday's round will consist of three best-of-seven baker matches, with the action expected to get underway at 9 a.m.
