Mahoney's Goal Lifts Lady Lions to Double OT Win
ALTOONA, Pa. - Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored a goal in the second overtime period of Friday afternoon's season opener at Spring Run Stadium, giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 victory over non-conference opponent Southern Vermont College.
Mahoney's tally came at 101:04, breaking a scoreless tie to give Penn State Altoona (1-0) a season-opening victory in dramatic fashion. The senior forward maneuvered the ball into the box and put two quick shots on goal from point-blank range. After a pair of saves by the Southern Vermont goalkeeper, Mahoney collected the rebound and tucked it inside the right post.
Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) recorded her first career win and first career shutout in goal for the Lady Lions, making six saves between the pipes.
Mahoney finished with a game-high six shots on goal and seven total shots. Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added two shots on goal and four total shots.
Prior to the game-winning goal, Penn State Altoona had several quality scoring chances that came up empty. During regulation, Mahoney was denied on a close range shot in a one-on-one situation with the keeper. In the first overtime period, Gabby Stauffer (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) narrowly missed a top shelf goal on a high floating shot.
Penn State Altoona posted a 17-13 advantage in total shots, including an 11-6 lead in shots on goal. Southern Vermont (0-1) led 4-2 in corner kicks.
Lady Lions soccer returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, September 2 with another home game. The team hosts non-conference opponent Waynesburg University for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
