Chatham Overpowers Lady Lions

ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer was dealt a 4-1 loss on Tuesday evening by non-conference opponent Chatham University at Spring Run Stadium.

For Chatham (4-1), it was the team's fourth win in a row and third win over an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team in the past seven days. The Cougars defeated Pitt-Greensburg 3-1 last Wednesday before blanking Hilbert College 4-0 on Saturday.

Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) netted her third goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (1-3). Emily Strouse (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) made her first start of the season at goalkeeper for the Lady Lions and stopped all five shots that she faced. Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) entered in relief of Strouse and recorded 10 saves.

After a scoreless first half, Chatham put the game's first goal on the board at 47:01. Taking a pass in the middle of the field from Victoria Vernail, the Cougars' Megan Sieg beat the keeper to her left on a shot from 10 yards out to put her team up 1-0.

Vernail increased Chatham's lead to 2-0 at 58:41, taking a pass from Tina Lett outside the box and dribbling in on goal to score on a shot from five yards out.

Mahoney cut Penn State Altoona's deficit in half just under five minutes later. Maddy Jorich (Middletown, PA/Middletown) set up the score with a centering pass from the right sideline that found Mahoney, who sent a shot over the leaping Chatham goalkeeper at 63:26 to make it 2-1.

But just 2:12 later, Darby Robinson's corner kick deflected into the net to put the Cougars back up by two goals, 3-1. Julie Bruening added another goal to Chatham's total at 68:10, maneuvering around a defender at the edge of the box and firing a shot past the keeper to put her team ahead 4-1.

Chatham posted a 25-2 advantage in total shots, including a 19-1 mark over Penn State Altoona in shots on goal. The Cougars also led 8-0 in corner kicks.

The Lady Lions hit the road for another non-conference game this Saturday, September 16, when they travel to play Lycoming College at 1:00 p.m.
