Lady Lions Fall 3-0 to Pitt-Greensburg in Final Game

ALVERTON, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer had its postseason hopes dashed on Tuesday night at Southmoreland High School's Russ Grimm Field, suffering a 3-0 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg in the teams' last game of the regular season.

The Lady Lions (5-12, 3-6 AMCC) needed a win to stay alive in the hunt for the sixth and final playoff spot in the upcoming AMCC Tournament.

Penn State Altoona's Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led all players in the game with four shots on goal, and she finished with six total shot attempts. Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) had a game-high eight shot attempts. Emily Strouse (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) started at goalkeeper for the Lady Lions and made one save.

Pitt-Greensburg (9-7-1, 4-5 AMCC) was led by Bri Burgunder, who finished the evening with two goals and one assist.

Burgunder put the home team on the board at 8:44 with her penalty kick goal. Just over eight minutes later, she picked up the assist on Allie Grimm's goal on a shot from six yards that gave Pitt-Greensburg a 2-0 advantage at the 16:50 mark.

Shortly after halftime, Burgunder tallied her second goal of the game when her shot from the left side of the box deflected off of the right goal post and into the net at 49:20.

Penn State Altoona led Pitt-Greensburg 18-9 in total shots attempted and 7-4 in shots on goal. The Lady Lions also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer ends its 2017 campaign with a 5-12 overall record, which includes a 3-6 mark in the AMCC.

Notes: Mahoney, the Lady Lions' senior forward, played in her final career game on Tuesday after four years with the women's soccer program.
