Women’s Soccer Ties Franciscan 1-1

ALTOONA, Pa. – Tuesday night's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference women's soccer game at Spring Run Stadium ended in a draw, as the Lady Lions played to a 1-1 tie with Franciscan University.

Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) scored her third goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (3-5-2, 1-1-1 AMCC), while Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) picked up assists.

Kaitlyn Harmon (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy) made two saves in goal for the Lady Lions, settling for her second tie of the season.

Neither team found much traction on offense during a first half that saw the two squads combine for just six shot attempts.

Penn State Altoona finally broke through for the game's first goal in the latter stages of the opening period. McConnell sent a corner kick into the box, where the ball was headed forward by Irwin and then tapped past the goalkeeper by Huston at 37:24 to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.

That score stood until late in the second half, when Franciscan (5-4-1, 1-1-1 AMCC) began to generate a push on the attack. That push resulted in a foul committed by Penn State Altoona inside its own box with under two minutes remaining in regulation, setting up a penalty kick for Franciscan. Katie Kilian scored on the penalty shot, tying the score 1-1 at the 88:11 mark.

Still knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game advanced into overtime.

Penn State Altoona came inches away from scoring the game-winning goal late in the first overtime period. With less than two minutes left in the period, Irwin sent a high kick toward the goal that deflected off of the crossbar. That deflection found Sam Jones (Clifford Township, PA/Mountain View), who fired another shot off of the crossbar from inside the box.

Those two chances proved to be the best scoring opportunities for either team during overtime. In the second overtime period, shots were tied at two apiece, with the only shot on goal coming from Franciscan.

Penn State Altoona led Franciscan in shots attempted (15-10) and shots on goal (4-3), while the visitors posted a 6-5 lead in corner kicks.

Irwin took a game-high five shots, including one shot on goal. Huston finished with three shot attempts, putting two on goal. McConnell had two shot attempts with one shot on goal.
