Lady Lions Power Past Medaille 4-1

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team secured its second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon at Spring Run Stadium, defeating conference foe Medaille College 4-1.

Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored two goals and added one assist for Penn State Altoona (4-5-2, 2-1-1 AMCC), while Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) finished with a goal and an assist. Lauryn Faber (Coral Springs, FL/Rosenblatt) scored her first collegiate goal for the Lady Lions.

In goal, Kaitlyn Harmon (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy) and Diana Miller (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) split time. Harmon started the game and played the first half, making one save and recording her fourth victory of the season. Miller played the second half and made a pair of saves.

Penn State Altoona scored three goals in the first half to establish a solid lead by halftime.

Irwin put the Lady Lions on the scoreboard at 9:25, firing a free kick into the bottom left corner of the net from just outside the top of the goal box. Huston made it 2-0 at 41:13, taking a pass from Irwin in the right side of the box and shooting the ball past the keeper from 10 yards out. Irwin notched her second goal of the afternoon just over three minutes later, getting a pass from Huston on the left side of the box and scoring from 12 yards out at 44:20.

Medaille (4-7, 2-1 AMCC) broke through for a goal at 71:22, when Kristen Kline took Marissa Campbell's pass in the box and scored to the goalkeeper's right, cutting Penn State Altoona's lead to 3-1.

But the Lady Lions got that goal back at the 86:05 mark, when a deflection in the box found Faber, who placed a shot top shelf to make it 4-1.

Penn State Altoona led Medaille in shots attempted (22-8) and shots on goal (13-4), while the Lady Mavericks had a slight 6-5 lead in corner kicks.

Irwin had a game-high seven shot attempts, including two shots on goal. Faber finished with a team-high three shots on goal, and Samara Kornegay (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and Huston had two shots on goal apiece.

Women's soccer's next game is at home on Wednesday, October 9, when the team will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg at 8:15 p.m.
