Women’s Soccer Clinches AMCC Tournament Berth With 3-1 Win

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona women's soccer punched its ticket to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference postseason tournament for the second season in a row on Saturday afternoon, when the Lady Lions wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 3-1 victory over conference opponent Hilbert College at Hawk Field.

With the win, Penn State Altoona (7-8-2, 5-4-1 AMCC) secures its second consecutive AMCC Tournament berth. The Lady Lions will enter the tournament as either the fifth or sixth seed – depending on the results of remaining games around the conference – and will travel for a first round game.

Sam Jones (Clifford Township, PA/Mountain View), Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford), and KK Wolfe (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) scored goals for Penn State Altoona in the win.

Diana Miller (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) started in goal for the Lady Lions and made one save, recording her first collegiate win.

Penn State Altoona made it 1-0 just under five minutes into the game, when Jones netted her third goal of the season at 4:59 on a shot that found the top right corner of the net.

The Lady Lions increased their lead to 2-0 shortly before halftime. Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) picked up the assist on the score by setting up McConnell's team-leading ninth goal of the year. When the goalkeeper came out to play the ball from Irwin, McConnell beat her to it and chipped a shot overtop of her and into the goal at the 36:57 mark to give her team a two-goal advantage.

Hilbert (1-12, 1-8 AMCC) cut its deficit in half shortly after halftime, when Grace Zabawa's top shelf shot beat the keeper at 47:19 to trim Penn State Altoona's lead to 2-1.

But the Lady Lions picked up an important insurance goal just over 20 minutes later. Rylie Thomas (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) got a pass to Wolfe, whose shot into the right side of the goal at 68:19 increased Penn State Altoona's lead to 3-1.

That score held up the rest of the way, and Penn State Altoona clinched the playoff berth.

The Lady Lions led Hilbert on the day in shots (32-6), shots on goal (14-2), and corner kicks (6-4).

Irwin and McConnell tied for the game-high in shots attempted with six apiece. Irwin led all players with four shots on goal, and McConnell put two on goal. Wolfe contributed four shot attempts with one shot on goal, and Jones had three with two on goal.

Now, Penn State Altoona will await the results of the last regular season games around the AMCC to determine where they will travel for their first round AMCC Tournament game. The date of that game is Saturday, November 2, with a tentative start time of 2:00 p.m.
