Women’s Soccer Blanks Pitt-Bradford for Senior Day Win
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team posted a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, as the Lions shut out Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford 4-0 at Spring Run Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Lions honored three players as part of the team's Senior Day festivities: Haley Chambers (Athens, PA/Athens), Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville), and KK Wolfe (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville).
After the pregame ceremony, Penn State Altoona (4-6-5, 2-2-2 AMCC) proceeded to turn in a well-rounded showing on the field. Four different players scored goals for the Lions, and the team posted a 34-5 advantage in shot attempts and a 21-1 edge in shots on goal.
Hannah Brubaker (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch), Schenley Farrell (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), and Huston each scored goals for the Lions, with Brubaker's representing the first of her collegiate career.
Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) and Caitlin Cowen (South Park, PA/South Park) combined for a shutout between the pipes for Penn State Altoona. Baustert got the start and made one save while playing the first half, picking up her fourth victory of the season. Cowen entered in relief at halftime and played a scoreless second period.
The Lions got on the board just under 10 minutes into the first half. Dee Dee Abbott (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) sent a long pass up the middle of the field, where it was taken by Farrell. Farrell dribbled just inside the Pitt-Bradford (0-14, 0-6 AMCC) box, where she lofted a shot into the top part of the goal at 9:59 to put Penn State Altoona up 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, the Lions increased their lead to two. Chambers kicked a long pass into Pitt-Bradford's end, and Huston collected it and chipped a shot over the keeper from 12 yards out to make it 2-0 at 12:36.
Smith tacked one more goal on to Penn State Altoona's total just before halftime. After a Pitt-Bradford foul in its own box, Smith was awarded a penalty kick. Smith's initial shot was saved, but the rebound bounced back to her, and she tapped the ball into the open net at 43:37 to put her team up 3-0.
Penn State Altoona made it 4-0 early in the second half. Huston sent a pass to her right in Pitt-Bradford territory, and Brubaker took it and dribbled near the right corner of the box, where she unleashed a shot that beat the keeper at the 57:52 mark to put her team ahead by four goals.
Smith finished the game by leading all players in shots on goal with five, while Huston posted a game-high six shot attempts, including putting three on goal. Camryn Kurilla (Mount Wolf, PA/Northeastern) and Wolfe also had three shots on goal apiece.
Penn State Altoona women's soccer will play its final regular season game at home this upcoming Tuesday, October 25, when the Lions will take on AMCC opponent La Roche University at 7:00 p.m.
