Women’s Swimming Places Third by Conclusion of AMCC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team competed in the fourth and final day of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center, and the Lions ended the meet placed third out of four conference teams.

The Lions wrapped up the four-day meet with a team total of 271 points to take third in their conference and sixth on the overall leaderboard. Penn State Behrend won the AMCC title with 667 points and was also the second-place team in the combined AMCC-SUNYAC standings. Alfred State College took second in the AMCC with 503 points, and Pitt-Bradford was fourth with 106 points.

Penn State Altoona had a trio of swimmers compete in Saturday night's opening final, the 1,650 Yard Freestyle. Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) led the way with a time of 19:34.60, placing third in the AMCC and 10th in the overall standings. Anna Heller (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) finished right behind her, recording a time of 19:38.22 to take fourth in the conference and 11th overall. Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) posted a time of 20:16.27 for sixth in the AMCC and 13th overall.

Three more Lion swimmers qualified for the 200 Yard Backstroke finals, the meet's next event. In the 'A' cut, McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) took fourth in the AMCC and eighth overall with a time of 2:22.13. Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) and Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) each made the 'B' final, with Sponsler clocking in at 2:24.22 for seventh in the AMCC and Daley finishing in 2:26.47 for eighth in the conference.

Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) made the 'B' final in the next swim, the 100 Yard Freestyle, and secured fifth place in the AMCC and 13th overall with a time of 56.75.

After that, Hailey Toth (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) and Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) each qualified to compete in the 200 Yard Breaststroke finals. In the 'A' cut, Toth secured third place in the AMCC and sixth overall after she finished in 2:39.97. Harris swam in the 'B' final, posting a time of 2:44.17 to place sixth in the AMCC and 12th overall.

The Lions ended Saturday night's finals in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, in which the team had a pair of squads competing. In the 'A' final, Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona), Holl, Daley, and Coleman combined for a time of 3:54.04 to come in third place in the AMCC and seventh overall. In the 'B' final, Smith, Heller, Buchala, and Toth came together to finish in 3:57.50, good for seventh in the AMCC.
