Lady Lions Tennis Downs Mount Aloysius 8-1 for Fifth Straight Win

EBENSBURG, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's tennis won its fifth match in a row on Sunday afternoon, when it posted an 8-1 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.

With the win Penn State Altoona (7-4, 6-2 AMCC), clinched the second seed in the upcoming AMCC postseason tournament. The Lady Lions hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over Penn State Behrend, which also possesses a 6-2 league record. Franciscan University nailed down the top seed with an 8-0 mark in the conference.

Penn State Altoona jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in Sunday's match by sweeping doubles. In No. 1 doubles, Kate Hugendubler (Reedsville, PA/Mifflin County)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) won 8-5. Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle)/Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) prevailed 9-7 in the No. 2 doubles match, and Patricia Whelan (Newburgh, NY/John S. Burke Catholic)/Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) won 8-2 in the No. 3 flight.

The Lady Lions then won five out of six singles matches to defeat Mount Aloysius (3-7, 3-5 AMCC) in dominating fashion.

Hugendubler won her No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-2, and Girol posted a 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-5 victory in No. 3 singles. Ruggles followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win in No. 4, and Whelan got a win with her 6-3, 6-2 decision. Acker rounded out Penn State Altoona's points with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 singles match.

With the AMCC regular season schedule now complete, Lady Lions tennis plays one more match before the start of the conference postseason tournament. Next Saturday, October 7, Penn State Altoona travels to face non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College for a 1:00 p.m. match.

After that, Penn State Altoona will have a first round bye in the AMCC tournament before picking up play in the semifinal round on Saturday, October 21.
