Women’s Tennis Edges D’Youville 5-4

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis picked up its first win of the season in Saturday afternoon's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener, topping D'Youville College 5-4 at the Gorilla House Gym.

Penn State Altoona (1-1, 1-0 AMCC) got off to a good start by winning two out of three doubles matches. The duo of Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle)/Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) prevailed 8-4 in No. 2 doubles, while the tandem of Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sierra Snigier (Seaford, DE/Seaford) won 8-5 in No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Lions and D'Youville (1-2, 1-1 AMCC) split singles play, with each team picking up three points. Jessica Stevens (Altoona, PA/Altoona) won 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, Ruggles earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 slot, and Acker triumphed 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 match.

Women's tennis returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, September 9, hosting AMCC opponent Medaille College for a match beginning at 11:00 a.m. While the match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Adler Tennis Courts, it will likely be moved indoors to the Gorilla House due to the expectation of heavy rain throughout the day.
