Women’s Tennis Grabs 5-4 Win Over Mount Aloysius

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis secured a big Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win on Sunday afternoon at the Adler Tennis Courts, defeating nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College 5-4.

Mount Aloysius (7-2, 5-2 AMCC) held the upper hand after doubles, as the Lady Mounties won in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Penn State Altoona (5-4, 5-1 AMCC) earned a point in No. 1 doubles, where the duo of Jessica Stevens (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Sadie Buzan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) prevailed 8-2.

But Penn State Altoona turned things around in singles, where the Lady Lions won four out of six matches to win the day by one point.

Stevens kept her singles record spotless, improving to 9-0 in No. 1 singles this season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) accounted for the eventual game-winning point, battling to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win in No. 2 singles to put her team over the top. Buzan won 6-4, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, and Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 slot.

Next up for the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team is a non-conference match at home tomorrow, Monday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m. against Juniata College.

Notes: Sunday's match marked the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team's Special Olympics Awareness Day. The Lady Lions welcomed local Special Olympics tennis athletes to the match, where they had an opportunity to play alongside the Penn State Altoona student-athletes on the courts before the match.
