Women’s Tennis Eliminated from AMCC Tournament With 5-3 Loss

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament run came to an end on Saturday night, when the No. 2 seed Lady Lions were upended 5-3 by No. 3 seed Mount Aloysius College in a conference tournament semifinal match at Westwood Racquet Club.

With the loss, Penn State Altoona (8-5) is eliminated from the AMCC Tournament. Mount Aloysius (13-2) moves on to face No. 1 seed Franciscan University tomorrow, Sunday, October 28 at 1:30 p.m. for the conference championship.

Mount Aloysius started Saturday's match by winning two out of three doubles matches. Penn State Altoona picked up a point in the No. 1 doubles match, where Manoela Villela de Quadros (Curitiba, Brazil/Chaminade-Madonna)/Jessica Stevens (Altoona, PA/Altoona) posted an 8-4 victory.

Stevens and de Quadros then combined for wins in the first two singles matches. Stevens increased her singles record to a conference-best 13-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles, and de Quadros battled to a 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 victory in the No. 2 singles match.

But Mount Aloysius earned wins in the No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 matches to end competition and grab a berth into the AMCC championship.

Although the Lady Lions' fall season is now over, the team is currently scheduled to play at least one non-conference match during the spring semester. The team is slated to host Frostburg State University for a home match on Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis ends its fall with an 8-5 overall record that includes a 7-1 mark in the AMCC. The Lady Lions' seven conference wins were the team's most since 2001.

Notes: Following the conclusion of the AMCC Tournament, Stevens was named to the conference's All-Tournament Team for her performance during the postseason.
