Mounties Squeak Past Lady Lions 5-4

ALTOONA, Pa. – In its home opener on Saturday at the Summit Tennis and Athletic Club, the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College.

Penn State Altoona (1-5, 1-3 AMCC) got off to a good start by winning two out of three in doubles. In the No. 1 doubles match, Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle)/Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) earned an 8-5 victory. In No. 2 doubles, Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) won 8-1.

But Mount Aloysius (2-3, 2-1 AMCC) came back to win the match by collecting four points in singles.

Ruggles and Girol accounted for Penn State Altoona's two wins during the singles portion of the match. In No. 3 singles, Ruggles pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory. In the No. 4 singles match, Girol triumphed 6-4, 6-4.

The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team's next match is Wednesday, September 18, when the team will travel to play non-conference opponent Frostburg State University at 6:30 p.m.
