Women’s Tennis Fends Off Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team finished its September schedule on a winning note, defeating Waynesburg University 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Penn State Altoona (4-7) started the match by winning two out of three in doubles. In No. 1 doubles, Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle)/Alivia Serenita (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) prevailed 8-6. In the No. 2 spot, Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park)/Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) won 8-5, producing the duo's team-best sixth doubles victory together this season.

The two doubles wins were the difference in the match, as Penn State Altoona and Waynesburg (1-6) proceeded to split the six singles matches.

Lewis won 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles, Girol earned her team-high seventh singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the No. 3 match, and Katie Kruza (York, PA/Central York) pulled out a 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 victory in No. 5 singles.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis resumes Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday, October 1, when the Lady Lions host conference opponent La Roche University for a 4:30 p.m. match at the Adler Tennis Courts.
