Lady Lions Close Out Regular Season With 8-1 Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis wrapped up its regular season schedule on Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg at The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

Penn State Altoona (6-8, 4-4 AMCC) took control of the match early by winning two out of three in doubles play.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) played to an 8-2 victory to secure their team-best ninth doubles win together this season. In the No. 3 doubles spot, Katie Kruza (York, PA/Central York)/Grace Butz (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) earned an 8-4 win.

The Lady Lions powered through singles play by sweeping that portion of the match, winning all six spots to pick up a seven-point victory in the overall match over Pitt-Greensburg (1-11, 0-7 AMCC).

Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) won 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match, picking up her sixth singles win of the season, which is good for the second-most singles wins on the team. Acker earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match, and Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) prevailed 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 slot.

In No. 4 singles, Girol posted a 6-3, 6-0 win for her team-leading 10th singles win of the season. Alivia Serenita (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) won 6-0, 6-3 in No. 5 singles, and Butz swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.

With the regular season now behind it, the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team has taken the number six seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament and will travel to face number three seed Mount Aloysius College in a first round playoff match on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. The location of that match will be the Ebensburg Tennis Center.

Notes: Sunday's match was Senior Day for the Penn State Altoona women's tennis program, and senior players Acker, Lewis, and Ruggles were recognized.
