Women’s Tennis Eliminated from AMCC Tournament

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 6 seed Penn State Altoona women's tennis team's postseason run came to an end on Saturday evening, when the Lady Lions were defeated 5-3 by No. 2 Medaille College in the semifinal round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament at Westwood Racquet Club.

Medaille (9-2) will advance to face No. 1 seed Franciscan University in the AMCC Championship match tomorrow, Sunday, October 20 at 1:30 p.m. Penn State Altoona (7-9) is eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

The Lady Lions picked up an early point by winning the No. 2 doubles match, where the team of Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) posted a strong 8-0 victory. It was the duo's 11th doubles win together this season, tying them both for the most doubles wins in a single season in Penn State Altoona women's tennis history.

But, carrying a 2-1 lead into singles play, Medaille used victories in the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles matches to pick up the five points needed to win the match.

Girol won her No. 4 singles match by a 6-2, 6-4 decision. The win was Girol's team-leading 12th singles win of the season, giving her the second-most singles wins in a season in women's tennis program history.

In No. 6 singles, Katie Kruza (York, PA/Central York) picked up her fifth win of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

But Penn State Altoona came up a point short, yielding the championship berth to Medaille.

Though the team's fall season is now complete, the Lady Lions are expected to return to action in the spring semester and currently have two non-conference matches scheduled. The team will go on the road to play Lycoming College on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m., and they will play a home match against Grove City College on Friday, March 27 at 4:30 p.m.
